A few years ago in highschool, we had to read Lord of the Flies. This is probably the only book I was required to read that really stuck with me.. It showed a lot of different themes and everyone has their own perspective of the book that really intrigues me. To me, it showed a lot about our human nature and how sometimes with power.. people can get carried away. Also how we all kind of look up to someone or rely on someone to tell us what to do, not that its a bad thing but this book just relates to the lives we live in some ways.
In the book, a group of boys are stranded on a tropical island without an adult there to supervise. They divide into two group, with the older kids and the younger ones. They tried to elect a “leader”, Ralph, but another one of the boys, “Jack” also wanted to be the leader. As the book goes on, more and more of the kids want Jack as their leader instead. That group basically ends up going crazy and beats one of the kids to death believing he was the “beast”. Towards the end of the book “Ralph’s group” confront “Jacks’ group” and one of the kids in Jack’s group pushes over a boulder and lands on one of Ralph’s friends who ends up dying. They try to hunt down Ralph to kill him but then start a forest fire that a passing ship sees and ends up getting on the island just in time to save the little boys.
I haven't read it, but I know a lot of students have enjoyed it. Also, this book was banned for sex, racist words and implying that humans are nothing more than animals.
ReplyDeleteI remember reading that book and watching the movie in one of my english classes in high school. I think I actually read most of the book too lol but I agree with you that we all leaders and followers. I have noticed in life that most of us can be scared to be a leader because when you think about it, it is true that we don't like to do things without instruction.
