Media Law and Ethics

The media case study I chose was about how its essential for us to protect our first amendment regarding freedom of speech and also since social media is available and used by pretty much everyone everyday.. we all exercise our right to freedom of speech. However, because we all have our right to express, companies providing that opportunity believe that they have the right to oppress everyone from using their services.

The First Amendment is supposed to protect the people but how is it supposed to protect the people when it is being used against them to take away communications rights which is the whole point of freedom of speech. These internet service providers want control over which speech they transmit and how they transmit it but I agree with the First Amendment scholars who say that they're only a service and just because they are our connection to get messages across, it doesn't mean they are engaging in free expression.

  1. I totally agree with you on this. Just because phone companies act as internet providers, it doesn't seem fair to censor content available on the internet because are using their network. It's pretty sad that they're trying to do this.

  2. Well, we have had photofinishers in the past who used to spy on personal pictures and some would not be voyeurs while others would. Some would call police if they thought people were making lewd pictures of kids at home. It is like someone observing a big building with a telescope looking for crimes and seeing naked people inter own homes. Gee that what the FBI did with Martin Luther King, well I guess gov't privilege trumps privacy. Incarceration by police is seen often where they will not take anybody's defense as to using their camera/phone to protect someone else and not know how to protect their use of it.
