In this Journalism 2 class I learned so much about each different type of media we use and how its affected society in every aspect of our lives. Media surrounds us whether or not we realize it, and I feel like before this class I didn't realize how it relates so much to the First Amendment and how it impacts our lives no matter which part of the world we live in. I notice how we rely on the media for news and entertainment but we also use it to connect and communicate with others. It really does play an important factor in our life.
Freedom from Speech - This article talks more about the short clip we saw in class..
Our rights are equal and if you have a right to do something or be somewhere, so should everybody else. Why single someone (or a specific group) out.
When we're younger, we are taught to express ourselves freely... its okay to color outside the lines and use our imagination. But the older we get and the higher grade level we complete, I feel like it becomes more limited. We're limited to what we're supposed to do, how we're supposed to do it, how we're supposed to feel and how much of it we can really express.

Media Law and Ethics
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/timothy-karr/verizons-twisted-plan-to_b_8396886.html
The media case study I chose was about how its essential for us to protect our first amendment regarding freedom of speech and also since social media is available and used by pretty much everyone everyday.. we all exercise our right to freedom of speech. However, because we all have our right to express, companies providing that opportunity believe that they have the right to oppress everyone from using their services.
The First Amendment is supposed to protect the people but how is it supposed to protect the people when it is being used against them to take away communications rights which is the whole point of freedom of speech. These internet service providers want control over which speech they transmit and how they transmit it but I agree with the First Amendment scholars who say that they're only a service and just because they are our connection to get messages across, it doesn't mean they are engaging in free expression.

Propaganda Techniques
AD #1: Glittering Generality, Testimonial, Hidden Fears, Weasel Words or Empty Phrases
It's using Glittering Generality by telling us only the positive things about this product: with this skin smoothing exfoliator, it's taking care of your skin but also treating your acne.
It's using Testimonial by showing the famous person in this ad supporting this product: Adam Levine.
It's showing Hidden Fears: this product will help get rid of acne (since no one wants acne because it's not "cute")
It has Weasel Words and Empty Phrases like: Treating your acne... taking care of your skin... those are really broad promises.
AD #2: Plain Folks Appeal, Glittering Generality, Bandwagon, Testimonial, Hidden Fears, Facts and Figures, Repetition, Weasel Words or Empty Phrases (Yes, I do think that this ad uses all of this propaganda/persuasive techniques)
Plain Folks Appeal: The quote said by Kim Kardashian, "I've reached my goal" shows that she also wanted a better lifestyle, or wanted to look a certain way for herself, and she had a goal.. just like most people do, and with "QuickTrim" she was able to do it.
Glittering Generality: In this ad it talks about all the benefits this product will have in the end
Bandwagon: It is sold in MANY stores, listed at the bottom of the ad.. which to me is trying to show that it is popular by having possible stores near you provide the product.. making it easier for you to get a hold of.
Testimonial: The famous celebrity, Kim Kardashian, used this product to look this way
Hidden Fears: This product will protect you from feeling unhealthy and keep you feeling better about yourself
Facts and Figures: Stating that this product is "CLINICALLY" shown to help increase metabolism
Repetition: In this ad it repeats the brand "QuickTrim" 11 times!
Weasel Words or Empty Phrases: Broad promises like how you can lose weight fast or reach your weight loss goals faster.

Magazine Proposal
Name of magazine: Full Of Beauty
Concept: We have a lot of Make-up Gurus out there on many different types of social media that many people like to "follow". I wanted to come up with an idea where this magazine talks about the best products for each individual. From skin-care to make up and even with hair!
Example: if you have dry, sensitive skin we would provide a "#1 proven product" that would be best for you and it would basically be advertised in this magazine. There will be ingredients listed and instructions on how to use it and typically how much it would cost.
Readers: This will mostly attract those interested in make up, beauty products and skin care or 17 and up
Competition: Glamour, Allure, Cosmopolitan. Consumers will be able to relate with each issue being different to match each season or holiday coming up.

MOVIES
I definitely enjoy watching movies! Honestly though, I used to fall asleep in the movie theaters and miss like a really big scene ALL THE TIME! It was such a bummer.. ANYWAYS, that doesn’t happen anymore (mostly) and I’d say my favorite movie of 2013-2014 would be X-MEN: Days of Future Past. I’ve watched the previous XMEN film series and I just love how this one showed them, well.. in the past.. to help save their future. It has a really good story line and I just love watching Marvel superhero movies. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/x_men_days_of_future_past/
Okay, so my favorite movie of all time? This is actually a hard one.. I have like a ton of favorite movies, HA! But if I had to try and narrow it down though it would definitely have to be GREASE! If I remember correctly, we had it on VHS.. when that was a thing.. and I would play it over and over again. I could still watch it over and over again. They have it on Netflix now too #YAAASSS (; Here’s the trailer when it came back in 2010… http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/grease/

BOOKS
A few years ago in highschool, we had to read Lord of the Flies. This is probably the only book I was required to read that really stuck with me.. It showed a lot of different themes and everyone has their own perspective of the book that really intrigues me. To me, it showed a lot about our human nature and how sometimes with power.. people can get carried away. Also how we all kind of look up to someone or rely on someone to tell us what to do, not that its a bad thing but this book just relates to the lives we live in some ways.
In the book, a group of boys are stranded on a tropical island without an adult there to supervise. They divide into two group, with the older kids and the younger ones. They tried to elect a “leader”, Ralph, but another one of the boys, “Jack” also wanted to be the leader. As the book goes on, more and more of the kids want Jack as their leader instead. That group basically ends up going crazy and beats one of the kids to death believing he was the “beast”. Towards the end of the book “Ralph’s group” confront “Jacks’ group” and one of the kids in Jack’s group pushes over a boulder and lands on one of Ralph’s friends who ends up dying. They try to hunt down Ralph to kill him but then start a forest fire that a passing ship sees and ends up getting on the island just in time to save the little boys.

Media Autobiography
With the eight types of mass media we are studying in this class, I chose to rate, as well as discuss, my relationship with each of them from the ones I use the least to the ones I use practically on a daily basis.
Magazines are the one type of mass media I hardly ever use. If I remember correctly, the last time I picked up a magazine was when I last went to the doctors office and I was waiting in the lobby or waiting room until my name was called. I honestly don’t have that much interest in magazines, which is a reason why I never subscribed to any, however I do find it to be very entertaining and a good source of media to pass the time by.
Audio. Thinking back to the time I had a CD player or even the last time a bought a CD must’ve been about 10 years ago! I absolutely love music! But with the kind of technology we have now where you can download a song on your phone or online… I hardly even go down the aisle with them anymore. However, my family in the Philippines, love it when we send them CDs! That’s pretty much where all of the ones I owned went!
Newspapers. I had a debate between which one I used the most or at least currently, compared to Audio, and I’d like to say that I was never the type of person to sit down and open up a newspaper and start reading about what was going on in the world, especially on a big black and white newspaper. However, I took a business law class recently and we had to find articles about businesses that related to the law or laws that reflected businesses and I started reading The Wall Street Journal more and more, even just out of curiosity.
Books. I absolutely love having a good book to read. I don’t read as often as I used to, or even as much as i’d like, however I do find myself in a bookstore sometimes looking for a new book to read! I remember way back in elementary school we had SSR, I think it stood for sustained silent reading?
Television used to be an everyday thing for me. Growing up I would watch TV before school and after school, then wake up early on the weekends and basically have my eyes glued to the screen. As I got older I didn’t have much time to spend watching TV, and now I don’t even have cable anymore! I still have a TV in my room, but now I just binge watch Netflix whenever I get the chance!
Radio. I’d like to say I use the radio more often now. On my way to school, on my way to work, on my way home.. I just turn on the radio in the car and even if its just to have some background noise, I turn it on. Especially in the morning, when majority of the stations have people talking, is usually a good way to start my day. I also enjoy listening to Pandora Radio or iTunes Radio, mostly because you can choose a station and it will just continue to play songs related to the type of genre you like continuously.
Movies was actually something I wanted to have a career in. Of course my awkwardness and kind of shy-self would not have worked out so well. I love watching all sorts of different movie genres and actually I go almost every Tuesday!!! All day long at century theaters, movie tickets are $6.50!!!! ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT!
Internet. What would I do without internet? It has become such a big part of my life and sad thing is I don’t know what I would do without it anymore. I feel like I rely so much on the internet and everything I do now requires to have internet connection. Whether its connecting to wi-fi to check my schedule and daily plans for work or doing research and submitting a paper for school online. I remember when I had to use the internet back then, we had to connect it through the phone line and if I remember correctly it was AOL and it would make like a dial tone sound while it was connecting, but it took forever! Now things are just so much more convenient and easy to hook up and connect, its just something I use on a daily basis now.
